Foam mattresses offer a very broad range of feel—from flexible latex to slow-sinking memory foam to blended layers that offer an experience somewhere in between. With such a variety of materials—not to mention a range of densities, firmness levels, and thicknesses—it can be a challenge to narrow your options and find a model that will help you get the best sleep.

    More on Mattresses

To that end, Consumer Reports asked hundreds of members about the mattresses they purchased between 2012 and 2022. They told us what brand they slept on; whether it was a foam, innerspring, or adjustable air mattress; and how comfortable they found it. With that data, our survey experts found the most crowd-pleasing brands for each mattress type. And while an individual member’s opinion of their mattress’s comfort is subjective, our large sample of ratings on 66,803 mattresses allows us to provide ratings you can trust on dozens of mattress brands.

How We Picked the Best Foam Mattresses

To determine the best foam mattresses, we began with the brands that rated best in our survey for comfort in the foam category. From there, we filtered for the foam models that scored the highest in our rigorous lab tests. These mattresses support bodies of a variety of shapes and sizes. They’re also durable and offer enough resilience so you’re less likely to feel stuck, a common complaint about foam mattresses. To learn more about how CR picks mattresses, see our comprehensive foam mattress ratings. (Prefer a bouncier feel? See our comprehensive innerspring mattress ratings.)

    How Consumer Reports Tests Mattresses

Our engineers have tested more than 200 mattresses, including more than 80 foam models. Using lab equipment to measure spinal alignment, we evaluate how well a mattress supports the body for both petite and large/tall back and side sleepers. With this data, we then calculate the support for average-sized sleepers. To simulate the typical eight- to 10-year useful life span of a mattress, we push a 309-pound roller over each model 30,000 times.
